A Coastal Cliffside Elopement on the Sunshine Coast, BC

Elopements

There’s a particular rhythm to elopements on the Sunshine Coast, a kind of unhurried intention that settles in the moment you step off the ferry, when the air smells like salt and cedar and the light moves differently here, softer and slower, filtering through the trees in a way that makes everything feel both grounded and a little bit suspended in time.

I spent the afternoon with Randi and Ben, from the two of them getting ready together in their little suite overlooking the ocean in Halfmoon Bay, before venturing up the coast to promise forever to one another on the cliffside in Pender Harbour.

The Sunshine Coast sits in this quiet in-between: less remote than Tofino, less busy than Whistler, just under an hour from Vancouver, and somehow it still feels like you’ve stepped into something slower. That’s what drew Randi and Ben out from Calgary for their coastal elopement. They got ready overlooking the water at Rockwater Secret Cove Resort, then we explored the cliffs and shoreline at Francis Point Provincial Park where you’ll find forest, rock, open ocean all within minutes of each other. It’s what makes a Sunshine Coast elopement work so beautifully: layered coastal landscapes, soft reflective light, and enough space to feel witnessed without feeling watched.

They stood at the edge of the cliffs at Francis Point Provincial Park with the ocean stretched out behind them and promised forever to one another. No aisle, no chairs lined up, no one watching to see who cried first – just wind coming off the water and their voices carrying out over the rocks. It was simple and a little wild and completely steady all at once, the kind of quiet where every word feels heavier because there’s nothing else competing with it.

After the ceremony, we just wandered. No big announcement that portraits were starting, no dramatic shift in tone. They were already married, already relaxed, already laughing a little differently than they were an hour earlier. I’ll nudge us toward better light or a stretch of coastline that feels open, but mostly I’m just walking with them while they settle into it. That in-between space right after the vows is always my favorite: it’s softer, less guarded, and it doesn’t need much from me at all.

Weddings are layered: shaped by people, emotion, and fleeting details. I pay attention to what’s unfolding and photograph it with clarity and care. The work is editorial in perspective, documentary at its core. The result is imagery that feels grounded, considered, and easy to live inside.
